MOUNTAIN SKILLS COURSES
At Baltinglass Outdoor education Centre we provide tailored Mountain Skills programmes in the Wicklow mountains.
All our course’s follow the BOS mountain skills syllabus.
Mountain skills enables people to gain the skills and techniques to enjoy the hills safely and as a pre-requisite for the mountain leader training course. The course is spread over two weekends containing mountain skills 1 and 2 respectively.
The course covers navigation, equipment, emergency procedures, steep ground, night navigation and much more.
There is also some theory as well although the course is very practical and hands on.
All specialist equipment is supplied, although the following personal equipment is required.
- Walking boots,
- Waterproof jacket,
- Waterproof trousers,
- Gaiters,
- Warm outdoor wear (fleece and thermals),
- Hat and gloves,
- Compass- Silva type 4,
- Head torch (plus spare battery),
- Day rucksack,
- Waterproof rucksack liner,
- small first aid kit,
- Sheet 56 and 62 maps.
